SAScHAThe South African School Children’s Help Appeal (SAScHA) is a non-profit, volunteer organization formed in 2001 by a small group of expatriates committed to making their stay in South Africa purposeful.
SAScHA’s mission is a simple yet vital one: to help underprivileged children have a brighter future through education.
Founded in 2001 by Bruce & Debbie Snyder, SAScHA is run entirely by volunteers who devote their time and energy to supporting severely underprivileged children at Diepsloot Combined School. This school provides its 1500 pupils with not just an education, but also a refuge. Many of the children live in dire poverty – with even their basic food and clothing needs unmet – and worse than this, many are also victims of abuse.
The challenge undertaken by SAScHA’s network of volunteers is to help provide an environment for these young people in which they can learn and grow and, ultimately, end the spiral of poverty.
It starts with providing very basic necessities to the neediest children – like a nutritious meal and a school uniform – and includes everything from sourcing schoolbooks and stationery to building classrooms and other essential facilities.
WHAT WE DO
It’s hard to ‘Be A Kid’ in these circumstances – harder still to focus on getting an education when you’re hungry, poorly clothed and having a tough time at home – but it’s happening at Diepsloot School and SAScHA is proud to be playing a part, It’s support falls into three areas:
FUNDRAISING & DONATIONS
To create and improve facilities at school through fund raising initiatives and the collection of essential items of clothing, books and stationery, to furniture, fittings, kitchenware and appliances ► keep on reading
Our 20/20 program appeals to companies (or individuals) with R20 000 to donate which goes towards building classrooms. ► find out more
SPONSORSHIPS
To secure and administer monthly donations (R300) to cover the cost of food, uniforms and books for particularly needy children.►sponsor a child
VOLUNTEER NETWORK
To help organise fund-raising events; to help with food collection and distribution; to assist with extra-curricular skills training projects; project manage building projects; and to provide a range of support services to the school.► join us
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Improving the lives of underprivileged children through education, like those of Diepsloot Combined School, takes two things; time and money.
If you can spare a little (or a lot!) of either, and would like to help make a difference to these needy kids, SAScHA would love to hear from you.
